Why you have leg pain arising from the back.

By Joshua Moffatt

Sciatica means pain in the hip and is commonly linked with the Sciatic nerve which is a bit of a celebrity amongst nerves in the body as it is the longest one and possibly the most well known.

What really causes Sciatica?

Most people with signs of Sciatica will have already had low back pain before they'd Sciatica; there is not any coincidence here as for most people the problem will originate there. The nerves that join together to form the Sciatic nerve actually originate in the lower back. As well as these nerves there are masses of muscles, ligaments, discs and spinal joints which can refer discomfort down the legs

Could it be something else?

In some rare cases Sciatica like symptoms might be caused by more heavy conditions such as Problems with arteries or some of the organs.

What is referred agony?

Here's where the brain confuses a pain signal from one area with another area. A widely found kind of this problem is folk with heart issues who feel pain in their jaw; the discomfort is coming from the heart but the brain confuses it with discomfort from another area

How long will I have Sciatica?

It relies on the severity of your injury and other risk factors:

Decreased activity, heavy lifting, lengthened sitting with slumped posture, prolonged sitting in soft chairs, smoking and previous damage of the low back all increase the probability of getting sciatica and for suffering extended symptoms

What can I do to cure my Sciatica?

Manual consultants like Osteopaths, Physiotherapists and Chiropractic consultants frequently treat patients with Sciatica. Acupuncture, Yoga and related exercise classes might also help. Analgesic treatments can be useful at decreasing the discomfort but they won't address the root cause

Do the NHS treat Sciatica?

Sometimes NHS treatments for sciatica will include pain relievers and exercises given by a physiotherapist providing it is not due to something more threatening.
