While Preparing For Weight Loss Surgery Alabama Patients Must Make Sacrifices

By Diane West

Obese or even seriously overweight individuals are exposed to a host of both physical and mental health problems. They are prone to heart disease, diabetes, cancer and hypertension. Many overweight people suffer from a poor self image and many even exhibit serious anti social behaviour patterns. Many try to lose weight but it can be an uphill battle. Some consider a surgical procedure to remove their excess fat. This is a serious intervention and when getting ready for weight loss surgery Alabama patients will have to make many sacrifices.

The most popular procedure to remove excess fat is called barbaric surgery, where large amounts of fat are literally vacuum from the body. This is a serious surgical intervention and surgeons will not undertake it unless the patient complies with many conditions. They have to first show that they are serious about permanent change by changing their habits and their life styles. Only after they have proven themselves will reputable surgeons consider the procedure.

One of the most important changes that prospective patients must make is to develop a burning desire to not only lose weight, but to permanently adopt an alternative lifestyle that will help to make sure that the weight is not gained again. Many patients find it difficult to change their habits to maintain a very high level of motivation and to make the sacrifices that they are required to make.

One of the most difficult requirements for many patients is to immediately stop smoking and to forsake alcohol. Nicotine users are more likely to develop infection, blood clots and other serious complications after the procedure. Surgeons will not accept a patients that has smoked during the previous six months. Alcohol must be forsaken because it causes the blood sugar levels to become unstable.

A dramatic change in the diet is also required. Prospective patients are required to consume protein with every meal and to avoid using sugar and caffeine in any form. Consuming liquids during meals are also forbidden. Patients are encouraged to consult a dietician and to lose at least some weight in a natural manner before the procedure is scheduled.

Patients have to start exercising. Low impact exercises such as walking, cycling and swimming are highly recommended. Other disciplines such as yoga that helps to improve muscle strength and tone and the overall flexibility of the patient are also encouraged. Such exercise programs not only benefit the patient physically but the rise of serotonin levels during exercise plays an important role in keeping the individual positive.

Part of the prior preparation period involves planning for the weeks after surgery. Patients must expect to feel uncomfortable and they must know that they will find it difficult to walk or to bend. Severe bruising can occur and this can cause much discomfort. However, these unpleasant side effects will go away after a while and the patient will be able to enjoy the benefits of a body with significant less fat.

A bariatric procedure is radical but for motivated and determined individuals this can be the first step toward a much more healthy and enjoyable life. Without a complete change in lifestyle, however, the procedure will merely provide a temporary solution. Patients need to believe in their own ability to take charge of their own lives once mores.
