How Leaders Can Start Improving Instruction Giving

By Ruth Graham

If one takes up a position of leadership, then he has to know how to lead the group that is going to be under him. One of the things that he needs to really learn is communication skills which include properly giving instructions to all the subordinates. If one wants to become an effective leader he needs to put some effort in improving instruction giving to his people.

Now, in order to become a very effective leader, one has to first learn the art of communication. Communication is a two way street so if one of the parties cannot understand what has to be done, everything will be in shambles. So the first thing that a leader has to do is brush up on his communication skills.

Now, if one wants to be a good leader, then one has to first start changing his mindset and stop thinking that his subordinates are expected to know things they do not know. The problem with most managers is that they expect their employees to know things that were not even taught to them yet. An example would be the jargon and the SOPs that the company has. The first step is to first stop using so much jargon and start with the training.

When it comes to training, it is very important that one trains employees completely at the start. This is why there are often training programs that are created for new employees. This will ensure that the employees will know how exactly they should fit themselves in the company and how things are run there.

When one gives instructions, it is advised that one do it step by step so that his subordinates can follow it. Making it step by step prevents confusion on what exactly should be done. Another thing to take note of is to always be patient when explaining the instructions as to not miss anything.

One other tip that one can do is to make sure that the instructions are written down or sent as a soft copy. A lot of managers send emails with complete instructions and have them CCd to other staff so that there is no blaming. This also helps bosses keep on check who takes responsibility for the tasks.

Finally, as a leader, one has to create the culture of openness and cultivate the attitude of asking questions no matter how stupid they may sound. The failure of most leaders is that they criticize their people for asking amateurish questions which will eventually make them scared to ask anything at all. Cultivating a clear path of communication is the best way to good results.

When one becomes a leader, he must learn how to delegate properly which means that he has to give instructions properly. After all, delegation is not really about telling people to do this or to do that, but it is communicating ideas to people so that they can translate them into actions. If one would want his ideas to come to life, then he must make sure he communicates them well.
