Everything You Need To Know Before Shopping For Cologne For Men And Women

By Amanda Allen

If you are exploring the world of colognes as a first-timer or even as a veteran, it is important for you to know that there are numerous products available in the markets. You can choose from a selection of top rated brands, and sometimes, making the best choice is not easy. Each product will have a distinctive scent and while some perfumes enhance ones appeal, others do a good job at lifting moods. You could also find a product that has the power to evoke fond memories. Irrespective of what you are looking for, there are certain facts you should know when shopping for cologne for men and women.

It remains imperative to know what various brands can offer before you decide what to invest in. Consider your personal style and even your needs and financial means. Choosing the perfect scent is challenging and you should know a few basics before money changes hands.

Colognes have different notes. These notes are what determines the final scent of a product. Notes comprise of three layers which are the top, middle and base notes. They work together and produce a distinct scent. For example floral perfumes may contain scent notes like gardenia, rose or geranium. Others will contain fruity scents with undertones of citrus or apple. You can also get exotic fragrances that contain spicy notes like star anise or cinnamon.

Men will mainly prefer musk scents. They are masculine and often have a heavier note. Whether you need unisex scents or those that are specifically for men or women, you need to have a proper understanding of notes and how the work to create particular scents.

You also need to know about concentration levels. The more concentrated a product is, the more expensive it will be. There are four concentration levels and if you want a scent that can last longer, then you should choose a product that is more concentrated. This may cost you a fortune, though you will get great value for your money.

Products with the highest concentration levels are named parfum or perfume. The scent they produce can last for a whole 24hours. The other level products are called eau de parfum and their scent can last for no more than six hours. From this point, there are the eau de toilette products which are fairly affordable and available in most retail stores. Finally, products with the lowest fragrance concentration levels are referred to as eau de cologne. Their scents linger for about 2 hours.

It pays to hit the markets as an informed consumer. When shopping in a land-based store, sniff the tester and figure out whether you like a specific scent. If you do, apply a tiny bit of the product on your wrist. Let it settle for a minute and sniff it once more.

Land based stores offer testers that customers can use. On the other hand, online stores offer a wider variety of products at the best rates. If you choose to shop online, make sure that you know what you are looking for. You may also want to be in a position to understand the descriptive information that is offered.
