The Therapy Of Probiotics For IBS

By Iva Cannon

The Irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal disorder like bloating and indigestion. This requires treatment as it can cause great discomforts to a person. You may have heard about the use of probiotics for the treatment of IBS but did not quite understand what it entails. Probiotics for IBS are a great medical therapy for treating this ailment by utilizing the little living microorganisms.

Probiotics are some living microorganisms or bacteria present in our bodies. Unlike the illness causing bacteria, these kinds of bacteria if used in adequate amounts can offer great health benefits. They are available in foods and supplements. The normal body of a person carries around 500 different types or species of these bacteria whose purpose is to keep our healthy immune system stable and solid.

Using antibiotics destabilizes the balance of healthy bacteria residing in the gastrointestinal tract. This imbalance causes the intestine linings to get destroyed. The destruction of intestines is dangerous as it can result in wounds commonly known as the ulcers. The introduction of these probiotic microorganisms into the intestines restores and stabilizes the balance which had previously been destroyed. This helps correct the damage on the intestinal linings.

Aside from treating the Irritable Bowel Syndrome, these microorganisms have also been used to treat other gastrointestinal disorders. These include; acid reflux, indigestion, diarrhea, colitis, ulcerative colitis and bloating. There are studies that have been carried out to indicate the responsiveness of IBS symptoms towards various different probiotics.

Many of the studies conducted are small and of very low quality. However, some of the high quality studies have shown that there are some bacteria which are very effective in suppressing the symptoms of the Irritable bowel syndrome. One such bacterium is the Bifidobacterium infantis. This bacterium has shown consistent improvements in gas and bloating.

Probiotics help regulate bowel functions that include immune function, sensation, motility and more. They are available in many different forms. You can find them as capsules, pills, liquid or even powder forms. They can also be found in singular or combination forms. There have also been tests on yeast to see its probiotic effects. The yeast which is some dead bacteria is being studied to get its effects for this treatment.

When you are planning on taking this treatment for the irritable bowel disease, there are some things you have to follow in order to achieve their maximum effects. One is that they should be kept refrigerated to prevent them from being ineffective. You should also ensure that the treatment contains some multiple bacterial strains and know well what each of them does to be able to select the one that you need more. Take the treatment immediately after finishing any antibiotics.

Adequate dosage taking should also be done. You should not be afraid of any overdose with the use of these microorganisms. This can never happen. You ought to take a considerable adequate amount of this bacterium for maximum effect. They should not be taken together with food at all. Take their dosage 30 minutes prior to eating or an hour after it. Also keep track of your therapy to see if you are making progress.
