Cambridge ON Chiropractor Provides Therapy For Auto-Accident Victims With Whiplash And Other Injuries

By Cody Gardella

When in an auto accident you should record the damages by taking pictures of the cars before the scene is cleared. Do not assume you have no injuries because some, whiplash for example, might not be felt for hours or even days after the crash. As a Cambridge Chiropractor will agree, the severity of your injury may not be apparent immediately following the accident.

Often a neck injury known as whiplash does not begin to hurt for hours and even days. This injury is common, especially in a rear end collision. Even when the cars are moving slowly, it can cause hurtful damage. The rough jerking of the head causes stiffness and the inability to turn the head from one side to the other.

In addition to strained muscles and ligaments there may be a subluxation of one of the seven cervical vertebrae. The vertebrae are small, hollow bones that house the spinal cord. When one of them is subluxated, it means it is out of place. It may then press against a nerve resulting in moderate to excruciating pain.

You will most likely require professional help. For care that is non-invasive, chiropractic is ideal. Most people prefer not to take strong prescription medication for the pain. The extent of your injury and level of pain will be evaluated prior to a care plan being arranged.

Your first office visit will be used to discuss your condition, take a medical history and complete a physical exam. Range-of-motion testing, reflex response testing and an x-ray help to assess the injury. Then your care can be started.

Care may or may not include wearing a cervical collar to stabilize the neck. It is only worn for a brief time. Hot and cold applications and massage may be used to relax the injured muscles and ligaments. Manual adjustments may be scheduled to ease one or more misaligned vertebrae back into its correct position.

Over time you can expect to gain more flexibility in moving your head from one side to the other. The manual adjustments have been successful for many accident victims. The goal of returning to work and recreational activities once again can be achieved.
