The recovery process is usually characterized by rational decisions that are made by addicts. These decisions combined with various methodologies translate to healthy lives. Self awareness is always the first step on how to start living sober because it unveils the true nature of ourselves that we did not know in the past.

The very first step is to commit oneself because change at individual level starts with the right state of mind. Commitment ensures that you stay clean and avoid people and places that may be of temptation. Keeping your mind occupied with stuff also ensures that you do not have time for thinking about substance abuse.

Set up goals characterized by attainability, that will be a checklist of the progress you make. These goals should always be time oriented thus classified into long term and short term goals. For the long term ones, this is what you hope to achieve at the end of the recovery process.

There are a number of books written to help addicts in living sober. This literature can be in the form of print or soft copy and are easily accessible thanks to the modern technology. This technique is highly recommended because awareness plays a big role in change attitude at personal levels.

There are several rehabilitation centers that have been set up with the goal of transforming the lives of addicts. These institutions have monitoring programs which ensure that the victims live healthy and reformed. Once an individual is enrolled, he meets other people with the same condition and it is through sharing that he fully recovers.

Social networking is a process that enables victims to keep in touch with family and friends during their recovery process. As they get emotional support from those around them, they are able to live positively by opting to stop drug abuse. The attention and care is usually needed because they experience withdrawal signs that result to depression.

Distractions like music and exercise, have proved to help one in complete recovery, simple because they communicate directly to the soul. Finding something that one is passionate about and sticking to doing it will ensure that drug abuse related thoughts are completely erased in your mind. One may also opt to writing as a source of releasing body pressure.

In summary, life in general is governed by choices and our role as human beings is to always be critical whenever need arises. Sustainability as a life goal, therefore ensures that our needs are met in both the present and future lives.
