The Truth About Psychiatry In Apex

By Linda Ruiz

Raleigh, North Carolina, is the state capital and part of Wake County. One of Raleigh's suburbs had an estimated population of slightly more than 40,000. It has a population density of around 2,400 per square mile. This is similar to that of Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a population density of just under 3,000 square mile. Compare this with The Big Apple, New York, at an amazing 27,778 per square mile. Next to New York, Apex barely qualifies as a one-horse town. There are plenty of lakes, trees and woods in this area of the state. This makes it unusual for anyone to need psychiatry in Apex.

The "Peak of Good Living, " as it is known, gets its name from its position on that section of the Chatham Railroad that connects Richmond, VA, with Jacksonville, FL. Apart from a series of devastating fires, the town's population grew steadily, rising to 20,000 in the 1990s. Today, it houses a significant shopping center and the crossroads of two highways, 55 and 64.

Fred G. Bond Park, or Bond Park, is one of the largest parks in Wake County and the largest municipal park adjacent to Apex. It harbors several athletic fields and has 4.2 miles of dedicated trails. A man-made lake is encircled by one such trail that is a favorite among cyclists and joggers. The lake is also popular with boaters and fishermen. Bond Park is slightly northeast of Apex itself.

Another park, Thomas E. Brooks, is claimed by the nearby town of Cary but is the same distance from Apex, which lies to the southwest of the park. This park has 224 acres of attractive scenery. Also host of sports areas, people say that you can pick up the odd basketball game at Brooks Park.

The branch of medicine concerned with preventing, diagnosing and treating mental health problems is called psychiatry. The three main categories of mental health problems are disorders of cognition, problems with perception, mood disorders like anxiety and depression, and thought disorders, such as schizophrenia.

The origin of the word psychiatry comes from the German for "medical treatment of the soul." The doctors who make psychiatry their specialty are known as psychiatrists. These doctors need to know not just medical science, but also the social and biological sciences. Psychiatric disorders may be generally placed into one of three groups: mental illnesses, severe learning disabilities and personality disorders.

A mental disorder is an anomaly that causes functional impairment or suffering of the subject or those close to them. The scientific study of mental disorders is called psychopathology. Designating an individual as a psychopath requires more finesse than noting that they have taken your parking place in the supermarket.

The diagnosis of personality disorder is unfortunate, because it may be perceived by the subject as being judgmental. The lay person might think that a nut case is a nut case. There are different components to a personality disorder. These may be cognitive, behavioral or a sense of "inner experience." A mental or personality disorder is designated as such if it interferes with occupational or social functioning.
