Health is important for a lot of reasons. Nowadays, people are becoming more and more interested about ways to stay healthy. When we feel good, we are able to do more and achieve happiness. Total-body wellness is possible and many want to know how to maintain a medication free life.

The reality is, a lot of people are taking at least one prescription drug. In western medicine, a lot of doctors prescribe these medications to patients. A common saying of the day is that there is a pill for every ill. The pharmaceutical companies make a lot of money on an annual basis because of the reliance so many people have on these drugs.

There are plenty of medical fields that provide patients with care solutions that to do not involve medications. Common health problems can be remedied through natural means and without use of medications. Sometimes changes in lifestyle and diet are all that is needed to see positive changes in well-being. All cases are different and sometimes medication may be needed to save lives or allow the ill to lead relatively normal lives.

It is risky to stop taking medications. For this reason, it is highly recommended that patients only do this under the supervision of a trained doctor. Some might prefer to work closely with a naturopathic, homeopathic, chiropractic or other doctor practicing alternative medicine. These professionals often reject the use of medication, surgery and other invasive techniques commonly seen in western medicine. Many natural supplements, herbs and practices can be useful for those requiring healing.

The reasons a person may want to quit or avoid medication will vary. Typically these drugs are not used to handle the main cause of problem. Instead, they focus on providing relief from the symptoms. Most prescription drugs come with a long list of side effects, some that are even worse than the original symptoms one might be experiencing. There are risks with taking these drugs, especially over a long period. Some people have become reliant or addicted.

There are basic practices that can be useful at boosting wellness sans medication. Consuming a diet that is balanced and healthy is important. People should regularly consume vegetables and fruits that contain the minerals and vitamins the body needs to function. Staying active through regular physical activity and exercise is also recommended for wellness.

In the modern day, people are crippled by stress and anxiety. This is a major culprit for medical problems so learning to deal with anxiety and stress is integral. The ways to go about this may vary by person, but many have found that engaging in hobbies, practicing yoga and meditation are helpful. It is important to relax the mind and body from time to time. Quitting bad, destructive habits, such as drinking, smoking and drug use is also helpful.

It may take time before a person is capable of getting rid of all of their medications. Those who eat well, remain active and eliminate stress in life are more likely to feel good and be happy, without taking any medications. People attempting to live this lifestyle are still encouraged to make regular visits with their doctor to ensure they are in good health.
